Corey Fishes.
This is a photo I took of Corey Arnold forever ago when he came to speak to my college about his photography. With my final portfolio, work and now commercial photography jobs, I didn’t have the time to edit them! I went to his talk with Tory and afterwards bought his book, Fish-Work: The Bering Sea, which is a beautiful book. I met him after his presentation and asked if it would be okay for me to take his portrait the next morning since I would be part of the group of students whose work he was going to critique. I was so nervous! He said yes, and the next morning I went to the grocery store and bought some fish to use in the shoot. I didn’t want the fish to be too obvious of a prop, so I also brought a salmon coloured sheet for a backdrop (to have a little play on words about his profession), as well while taking his portrait I asked him to look angry, or “crabby” in one of the images, so that I could title the portrait “crab”. The photoshoot was a lot of fun, and I had the help of Orquidea Del Rio, and Adriano Ciampoli to ensure that it ran smoothly. It was a pretty basic set-up (which was good since I had about 10 minutes to prepare), but I’m really happy with the images. Here is one of my favourites.
Corey was a lot of fun to work with, and was really accomodating to any of the ideas that I had for the shoot. In this shot he has the fish on each of his fingers held up in front of his hand to make it look like a make-shift beard.
If you haven’t already, you should head over to his website and check out his work. It’s really quite beautiful. www.coreyfishes.com
